This quiz builds learner motivation by leveraging the Zeigarnik effect1, a psychological trait that allows people to remember and focus on elements of a task that is undone better than they can recall details about a task that has been completed.
Each time the learner correctly answers a question, a new piece of the puzzle is revealed. The entire puzzle is visible throughout the quiz. The unearned pieces are a motivational reminder that the task, in this case the quiz, is unfinished. If learners were only able to view the pieces they had earned, they wouldn’t be able to enjoy the anticipation of earning them all.
